ABOUT VOLUNTEERING

Most of the people working with the children are volunteers commonly referred to as co-workers. They work and live together with the children in their care. Some of the volunteers are long term co-workers who are commited for at least two years. Usually they already have some Camphill and/or curative educational experience when joining us. They carry more responsibility in the community than the short term co-workers who are committed for one year (or sometimes less) and usually come without any relevant experience.

If you are considering joining us as a volunteer, please be aware that, while the work here is very rewarding, it is also extremely demanding. You will be working six days a week from 7am until 8-9pm with not more than two hours' break a day. On top of this you may need to attend to the children during one or two nights a week.

Often, the main reason for many young people to volunteer at different organisations worldwide is to experience a different culture and country while the reason to help is secondary. If your main motivation for joining us would be to see South Africa, we are not the place for you. Our work needs more commitment than what a charity tourist can offer. (You will still have eight weeks to explore the country and some of its neighbours.)

If you still want to join us after having read the above then please go to SHORT TERM VOLUNTEERS or LONG TERM VACANCIES in the VOLUNTEER menu.
